Since 1995, The Garden Club of America has named a Plant of the Year, awarding its Montine McDaniel Freeman Horticulture Medal annually to encourage the use of native trees, shrubs, ground covers, vines and perennials that are little known, but worthy of being preserved, propagated, promoted and planted. The Akron Garden Club nominated two honorees, Amelanchier canadensis ‘Glenform’ in 2005 and Abies concolor, White Fir, in 2011.
