Throughout our history GCA has worked to preserve the natural
beauty along our federal highways culminating in the passage of
Ladybird Johnson’s Highway Beautification Act in 1965. In the 40
years since passage, the powerful billboard industry has
successfully gutted the legislation to the point that unless your
community has strong sign regulations, billboards can be constructed almost anywhere. We strongly encourage you to take an active stand in your community's billboard legistlation
.

How to Take Action

• Read “Billboards in the Digital Age,” published by Scenic America and in your packet.
• Visit the web site, ScenicMichigan.org, a model organization for all states to emulate.
• Learn the safety issues that make electronic billboards hazardous.
• Show Scenic America’s power point presentation on electronic billboard at Club or Conservation meetings. Found at: http:www.scenic.org/billboards/digital
• In Michigan, help Scenic Michigan add at least 25 members by going to
http://www.scenicmichigan.org/membership_enrollment/registration.cfm and joining.
• In Ohio, strive to make Scenic Ohio stronger: volunteer and identify potential Scenic Ohio Board members and/or volunteers who will give of their time and resources.
• In Indiana, start a Scenic Indiana.
• Tell all the communities in your state of the need for strong sign ordinances. See packet example from Michigan or go to
http://www.scenicmichigan.org/issues/SignOrdinanceRecommendations.html
• Assist Scenic America in maintaining their list of your State’s communities that have strict billboard control.
• Aid in the passage of a 3 year state moratorium on electronic billboards.
• Get to know your State Department of Transportation (DOT) officials.
• Track billboard legislation in your state by enlisting the help of environmental lobbyist.
